A tagline is a phrase that sums up your organization in just a few words. A unique tagline makes it easy for people to remember you.
What is a tagline?
A tagline is a very short phrase. It should tell people what your organization does and what makes it so great. Your tagline should be unique, making a promise that only your organization could fulfill.
Taglines have been a part of marketing for a long time. They have been used by all sorts of companies, from newspapers to film studios.
You may recognize these taglines:
- For every child (UNICEF)
- Think Different (Apple)
Your tagline appears in a standard place on your website. Place it right above, below or next to your logo in the top left corner of the page. Doing this will make your visitors 89% more likely to remember your logo. It helps them navigate the site as well.
Taglines are the one place on the page where users most expect to find a concise statement of the site’s purpose.

Why should you have a tagline?
A site visitor will read your tagline to quickly get a sense of who you are. Regardless of the web page they’re on, the logo and tagline will tell them if they came to the right place.
Taglines are an efficient way to convey a message. Visitors look to find information about the purpose of your website in the top left corner of the page. That makes this area one of the most important parts of your website.
Elements of a strong tagline
Make your tagline …
- Descriptive and straightforward – what is it your organization does?
- No longer than 8 words – write a complete phrase but keep it as short as possible.
- Unique – differentiate yourself. Ideally, your tagline should only apply to your site or business.
